Transcript of Your Best Next Move: Make Uncertainty Part of Your 2022 Strategy
Hi everyone, Bobbie LaPorte here again with my weekly leadership tips for your Best Next Move, where I help you see continuing curveballs as an opportunity. We’re done reacting to them, or pausing, waiting for a new kind of certainty to return. This year I will help you actively use your personal agency to accelerate what you want to accomplish in 2022.
This is my first vlog of 2022. I hope you enjoyed the holidays and took time to relax and reflect on 2021. I certainly did. I thought a lot about our journey over the last two years – and what’s next. It does feel like this is a condition that we will be living with permanently. Yet I still see many of my clients and colleagues hesitating to really embrace that this is it. If they are not hitting the “pause” button, waiting for certainty to return, they are at least hoping that some sense of what was before will return.
It’s uncomfortable, it’s human nature to want certainty. I get it. I feel it too.
I have been down this dangerous road myself many times: of hesitating, of not knowing how to respond and proceed. My Ironman racing experience has taught me many lessons that have helped me see “what is possible” in times of doubt and distress. There is a saying we have when training for an Ironman race, which is 140.6 human-powered miles of swimming, biking, and running, and that is the following:
“What you choose to do in the first 130 miles creates conditions for success
in the last 10 miles.”
On race day, I need to rely on my ability and preparedness to navigate through uncertainty. Because no matter how hard I train, race day will certainly throw me a curveball and I will need to make choices that impact my success that day.
And I’ve seen so much progress with leaders who do embrace uncertainty; they experience an expansion of hope and possibility with their teams and themselves. They are creating the conditions for their success down the road by acting – now.
So, in 2022, I’ve decided to continue my Best Next Move theme, but with more of a sense of urgency, to help you stop stalling or reacting and take advantage of opportunities in front of you. To go from saying “Oh shit” to saying “Oh wow.”
So, let’s get started. I’ll see you next week. In the meantime, use your personal agency to decide, act, move. Anything that means progress.
