Hi everyone, Bobbie LaPorte here again with this week’s Coronavirus Curveball tip of the week. Over the past 5 weeks I have been sharing with you tips and techniques to use with your team to help navigate through the Covid-19 pandemic.
Today I want to talk about you. As leaders, we often put the needs of our teams ahead of our own, particularly in this continuing time of crisis. And right now many of you also have additional family responsibilities – whether it is schooling your children or looking after elderly family members.
So, with all of this….I want to talk with you about self-care, which is particularly important right now. Stress, fatigue, disrupted routines and unrelenting uncertainty build up and can diminish your judgement, at a time when you need to make decisions and give the guidance and direction that is so important right now.
I know this sounds basic….but as a reminder make sure you are eating healthy, getting enough sleep, exercising – whatever that means to you. That includes taking breaks from being at your desk…it is very easy with all the Zoom calls you are on, answering emails, etc. to find yourself at your desk 4+ hours without a break. Set a reminder to get up and least stretch and walk around every 90 minutes. Also, you need to get your heart rate up.
For me, since my gyms are closed, I am getting creative with my cardio training: jumping rope, walking up and down the stairs, taking a jog into GGP or up a small hill. Whatever you can do..it is key to get your heart rate up. It has physiological, neurological and mental benefits that will build the resilience you need – for yourself and everyone else who is depending on you right now.
That’s my message for this week. I’ll see you again next Monday. In the meantime, remember that leadership makes the greatest difference when the world around us is uncertain. Take care of yourself!
