In Bobbie’s April 13 “Coronavirus Curveball Tip of the Week” video, she explains how to combine confidence with realism and keep your team focused on what they CAN control during this time of unrelenting uncertainty.
Transcript of Coronavirus Tip of the Week: Bounded Optimism
Hi everyone, Bobbie LaPorte here again with this week’s Coronavirus Curveball tip of the week. I hope you were able to enjoy and celebrate last week’s religious holy days with your family, even though we were not able to come together physically.
We are entering our fourth week of sheltering-in-place; and while many of us may be settling into a routine, there is no definite date when this phase we are in will end..so the unrelenting uncertainty continues.
To help address this, today I want to share with you a concept called bounded optimism – which is simply confidence combined with realism. The confidence comes from the plans, practices, and support your company has put in place to deal with this crisis; the realism is adapting to changes in circumstances and helping your team be prepared for what might come. So, in terms of daily actions, what does this look like?
- Keeping your team focused on what they can control – like their work schedule and deliverables, taking care of themselves and their families.
- As this period of time becomes extended….anticipate how your teams’ work might need to be flex and prepare them to accommodate longer periods of work from home.
- Be sure to acknowledge and celebrate progress and successes
I hope this is helpful; I’ll see you again next Monday, In the meantime, remember that leadership makes the greatest difference when the world around us is uncertain. Take care.
